The Bechdel Test asks three questions:
1) Are there two women in this story?
2) Do they have a conversation with one another?
3) About something other than a man?
On average, half of American films do not pass this test. 20% of stories in Hollywood have female leads or co-leads. 30% of speaking roles are women. The movies we watch simply value men’s stories more than women’s stories.
As improvisors, we are constant story-creators. It means we are making choices all the time about what kinds of stories to tell, and that gives us a wonderful opportunity to intentionally challenge some of the typical patterns that shape narratives.
In this show, we will create stories that center around women. Some of those stories will involve men! Some may not.
